OCT. 14 – THE INDIGENOUS PEOPLE’S DAY
Yes, I do remember, it was incorrectly called “Columbus Day”, and it still is in the less educated southern and some Mid-country states.
As President of Leif Erikson League half a century ago, I worked with the then Mayor Joseph Alioto of San Francisco to have the name of this day changed to the more appropriate “Indigenous People’s Day”. Why continue to honor Columbus, who brought so much misery and mayhem to this country, including sickness and biblical nonsense, forced on the natives with lies and weapons. The sickness we got rid of, the religious nonsense is still raging and holding the country back from a more progressive agenda.
In the more enlightened coastal states, Columbus Day is not celebrated as widely anymore due to growing awareness of the problematic aspects of celebrating Christopher Columbus. These include the violent abuse of indigenous peoples, the launch of the transatlantic slave trade, and the introduction of lethal diseases to the Americas. Many states, universities, and cities now observe Indigenous Peoples Day as an alternative to Columbus Day, honoring the culture and history of Native Americans. That’s the way it should be all across the country!
