Yes, it can be done, shedding yourself of the superstition you were born with, fed up with, raised on and schooled on. It may take 30 years, like for former Catholic Tom Huening, the author of “Spiritual Choices Putting the HERE in Hereafter”, but it was well worth it, he explains in his book. It is actually very good reading, even for us freethinkers, where he in a very fun and entertaining manner goes through all the major religions people have cooked up through the ages, and takes them all apart, one for one, with none spared.
Although declining with education the world over, especially in the more progressive countries in Northern Europe, a wide variety of religions are still with us, still doing harm, and still hampering development of a better and safer world for us all. Religion was even part of the reason for the Russian attack on Ukraine, a country which under more honest and better educated management tried to ease up on the Old Russian Orthodox Catholicism by promoting their own, somewhat more palatable version of the rusty old scary tale. Then again, when did superstition stop wagging its scary head as a prelude to wars? For us who lived through WWII and lost loved ones, it is particularly painful that both Catholics and Protestants in Germany supported Hitler, and made even his killing of Jews that much easier, and directly in line with what he promised in his “Mein Kampf”, that he would be doing God’s work. After Holocaust, it is very difficult to understand why antisemitism is still contaminating even our society.
