When will we learn? Ever, or never?
Why did we go in to help the Taliban in Afghanistan against Russia in the late 70s? We knew, or should have known, already then what the Taliban stood for! Why couldn’t we stay out of it and let the Soviets try to handle a country that no outsider had been able to control before? Why should we stoop head-on into it after 9/11 and attack a country that actually had nothing to do with the terror attacks on us, – thereby quickly wasting the world-wide goodwill after 9/11? Why not be a bit smarter about it, and instead get bin Laden the way President Obama eventually did, – after his predecessor George W. Bush had given up and “lost interest”?
And why should we add to the overall misery and attack Iraq, too, and thereby eliminate one country that somehow countered the threat from Iran and made it harder for Al Quida to find safe grounds?
Have we seen now what it all resulted in? What do we have to show for the thousands killed or maimed and the trillions spent?
Have we learned to stop and think for a moment next time? Or, do we have to make the same mistake again?
